In a world of plenty, it's unacceptable that millions of children still go to bed hungry. Right now, 153 million children across 72 countries are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. As a Canadian I’m deeply concerned about global inequality.

As Canada prepares to attend the G20 Summit in Brazil this November and building on the recently announced National School Food Programme, I urge you to support increased funding for school meal programs in low-income countries. Nutritious school meals do more than fill empty stomachs—they empower children to learn, grow, and thrive. They boost school enrolment and attendance and help break the cycle of poverty.

Investing in school meal programs has a profound impact on girls' education and well-being. Providing meals at school encourages families to keep their daughters in school longer, reducing the risk of early marriage and pregnancy. This aligns with Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy, which prioritizes gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. By supporting school meals, Canada can help create a more equitable global food system and empower girls to reach their full potential. 
 
Prioritizing school meals is also good economic policy. For every $1 USD invested returns up to $9 USD in economic returns in recipient countries, thanks to the improved health, education, and productivity outcomes it generates. This policy is especially effective when investments allow local food production to flourish.

I ask you to take a stand at the G20 Summit and commit to increasing Canada's support for school meal funding. Let's lead by example and help build a just and equitable world where no child goes hungry.
