I support the demand of the Friends of Balls Bridge and Little Lakes, that the Province of Ontario designate the proposed Little Lakes Pit for an Environmental Assessment.
 
The proposed Little Lakes gravel pit is in the heart of a precious cultural and natural heritage area renowned for swimming, fishing, birdwatching, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, plein-air painting, photography and the spectacular fall colours drive, and community enjoyment accessible to everyone. It’s everyone’s backyard, and all backyards are connected.
 
This pit, if approved, will directly impact the beautiful forests, wildlife corridors, four lakes and the Maitland River that is home to many animals, amphibians, birds and trees, plants, and endangered turtles.
 
The historic Ball’s Bridge, saved from demolition by the Friends of Ball’s Bridge in 2006, remains the heart of the Friends of Ball’’s Bridge & Little Lakes community. The unique experience of the bridge will be devalued by the noise, dust and vibration of an open pit gravel mine.
 
There is already more than enough gravel to meet demand in Ontario – the province permits companies to mine 13 times more gravel than the industry requires each year – there are no government controls or demand to demonstrate need vs greed. Farmland in ACW is more important than another gravel pit
 
The province must address these ongoing concerns by conducting an Environmental Assessment on the Little Lakes pit.
