There's a reason we weren't able to get tickets to the Eras Tour-- and that's because of Ticketmaster's shady-- but legal-- mergers. This could be easily prevented with significant antitrust legislation, and we need our Swifties in Congress to deliver. Antitrust legislation prevents big mergers from happening. Big mergers help companies develop monopolies on services and goods that are essential to life, like Taylor Swift tickets, internet access, healthcare, and so much more.

A competitive marketplace is one of the core values of the American economy. Taylor Swift is one of the core components of American culture. Without the two, our country suffers.

In case you don’t remember, when tickets for the Taylor Swift Eras Tour went on sale, thousands of fans were left ticketless. With the international superstar announcing a pre-sale of her long awaited comeback tour, Swifties of all ages and backgrounds spent the day glued to Ticketmaster's website, only for the launch to go horribly wrong. If you were not a victim of The Ticketmaster Crash of November 2022, your constituent (me) was.

Examining why this happened is critical in ensuring this never happens again. Quick research shows that the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger has strangled competition for concert promotion and ticket providing, making Ticketmaster a monopoly in the space.

We need swift, decisive action against mergers like these. As a Congressperson, you have the power to:

* expand federal authority to oversee and prevent certain business mergers
* strengthen antitrust laws
* increase funding for FTC enforcement of antitrust laws

A simple first step will be to support H.R.7101/S.3847 - Prohibiting Anticompetitive Mergers Act of 2022. This would authorize the FTC and Antitrust Division of the DOJ to retroactively unwind mergers that are described in the bill, and create a freer market for all Americans, Swiftie or not.
