Full-day kindergarten (FDK) is a smart investment in both the future of Utah's children and our state. Kids in FDK classrooms show amazing gains over the school year - every child should have the opportunity to experience that kind of growth.

When Utah's kids do better, Utah does better. With a $3 billion dollar budget surplus, now is the time for the Utah legislature to fulfill this promise to Utah children and families.

I believe the education of Utah's children is connected to the future prosperity of our state. Giving all of our kids - no matter where they live or what their parents earn - the same chance to make a full year of progress in kindergarten is the right thing to do for Utah families. For every $1 we invest in early education interventions, we can realize up to $12 in savings later on.

Utah schools are showing that kids in full-day kindergarten experience 2 to 4 times the growth of their half-day peers. When kids get the support they need at the start of their education, their chance at success in later grades - and even in their adult years - is greatly improved. Every parent should have the choice to enroll their child in full-day kindergarten, to give them the chance at this type of success. Right now, only 30% of kindergarteners can attend a full-day kindergarten program, which means thousands of children are left out!
