Since the start of the year, there have been more than 750 deaths in aged care, and Covid outbreaks in more than 1000 aged care facilities have exposed an aged care system at breaking point.
And these are just the cracks we can see. Close to a hundred thousand elderly people have been waiting throughout this pandemic to receive home care, while home care workers have spent two years on the frontlines without adequate pay, training, or respect.
But even before the Omicron wave, aged care workers were understaffed, poorly paid and treated with little respect. They are fed up with the constant inaction from the federal government to change aged care.
This is a female-dominated industry with many workers coming from migrant backgrounds. Women working in aged care are undervalued and overworked. It is Scott Morrison and Richard Colbeck's responsibility to fix the aged care mess!
Ared care workers are asking for your support on International Women's Day. Our goal is to pressure politicians to fund more care-time and proper staffing so aged care workers can provide our older Australians with the dignity and care they deserve.
