I’m writing today about the growing chaos in our airports that is causing extreme delays for Canadian travellers and increased concern about safety and security in our airports and in the skies. This situation also affects airport workers, who are experiencing short-staffing, low pay and even higher than usual stress caused by the understandably increased frustration of travellers. Everyone in Canada’s airports needs the federal government to take action now.

As my MP, I’m asking you to push the government of Canada to take responsibility and use its power to fix the situation. As a first step, the government can make sure airport pre-board security screening officers get the compensation and working conditions they need do the job we all rely on them to do. This would also help recruit more security screeners to the job, so we can keep our skies safe while making those lines shorter.

Pre-board security screening officers are crucial to keeping passengers moving. They are also the first line of defence in keeping our skies safe.

As you may know, in Canada, even though the screeners work for one of three private, multinational security companies, those corporations are overseen and funded by the federal government, through the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

I also ask that you join me in asking the government to cancel CATSA’s latest scheme, which gives bonuses to security screeners who come to work sick. I think that’s a lesson we all should have learned over the last two years. Encouraging a screener who is sick to come to work and be in contact with hundreds or thousands of people travelling all over Canada and around the world makes no sense. It has to stop. Instead, better salaries must be paid to these workers who play such an essential role in Canadian air travel and safety.

I hope you agree that we need to end the chaos at our airports.
