I urge you to vote YES on the Basic Income resolution.

Municipalities bear the brunt of income insecurity and, as councillors, you see first-hand how poverty and economic precarity affects our families and communities. These are issues that cannot be solved by one community alone and that is why it is so important that ours adds its name to the growing list from across the Atlantic and country, who are pressuring the federal government to act.

Basic Income has been demonstrated time and again to be a good investment in our people, our economy, and our communities. As you have heard in chambers, it improves health, safety, and economic mobility. Indeed, a report by the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis showed that a national Basic Income could grow the Atlantic economy by $5B/year, create 41,000 new jobs, and increase private capital investments by nearly $900M, while lifting 183,000 Atlantic Canadians out of poverty. This matters not only to the residents of St. John's but to all Canadians. It is a policy that can only be adequately addressed with input from all levels of government, therefore I urge you to ensure that St. John's leads on the issue and to stand up for the interests all Newfoundlanders & Labradorians. The need for changes to our social policy have always first been identified in municipalities. From Universal Healthcare to Old Age Security, the debate for how we build stronger communities has similarly always started at City Hall. I urge you to continue this proud tradition and vote yes on the Basic Income Motion.
