Tell your City Council Member: Thanks for Committing to Defund SPD!

Last week, seven of the nine Seattle City Council members pledged to meet community demands to defund SPD by 50%, to reinvest that money in community-led health and safety programs, and to call for the release of protesters.

But our work isn’t done yet! We need to make sure these council members know we support their pledge and they should take immediate action.Send a thank you email to Councilmembers Lorena Gonzalez, Teresa Mosqueda, Kshama Sawant, Tammy Morales, Dan Strauss, Andrew Lewis, and Lisa Herbold for pledging to defund SPD. I am writing to thank you for listening to the residents of Seattle and pledging to defund the Seattle Police Budget by 50%, reinvest that money into community-led health and safety programs, and ask Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes and King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg to release all protesters, drop all charges, and expunge arrest records for all protesters. Please, hold the line. Don't forget that SPD has broken their oath to protect and serve -- not just this summer as we exercised our constitutional right to peacefully protest, but in their documented long-term discrimination against BIPOC citizens. When we spoke out, they laid their loyalties bare, and they're still expecting zero consequences. We the people pay their salaries, and they have abysmally failed their performance review. Hold them accountable. Caitlin M.Seattle

Hello. I am writing to express hope that you will continue to support the effort to defund the SPD by 50%. I had read that you have pledged support for such and initiative, and with the vote coming up, I wanted to write to you and encourage you to proceed. At a time when local government is the most effective governing body we have, there is a no stronger way to set a precedent than to defund our militarized police force and reprioritize those funds to community action efforts and replacement services. I look forward to seeing how you will put this into action - that last part needs to happen IMMEDIATELY especially given the new arrests over this past weekend. Especially during this time of COVID-19, keeping protesters in jail for exercising their constitutional rights is unconscionable. While it's true that some protesters may have committed crimes, we have also recently seen numerous cases of police lying about the situation (with absolutely clear proof this was the case) so I feel that all who were arrested during protests should simply be released. I hope you will also do what you can to ensure that EVERY improper/illegal act by SPD or other city/county officials during the protests are investigated, and that offending officers are disciplined appropriately. I have been truly shocked by some of the footage I've seen, from may up through last night (Sat. 7/25). My eyes have been opened and I find it extremely upsetting. I (and the rest of Seattle) am looking to you all to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. Police brutality/violence is absolutely unacceptable. Yet it continues to happen over and over. THIS MUST CHANGE. Again, thank you for being on the right side - but please keep pushing as hard as you can for meaningful changes NOW. We are sad, scared, and angry, and we are counting on you. Jenny H.Seattle
