The Games Legislators Play
We'll keep this short...
Senate Bill 1933 empowers the secretary of state to take over a county's election administration if the SoS has "good cause" to believe that a "recurring pattern of problems" exist with the county's election administration or voter registration.
You might think that a bill that gives an unelected, partisan political appointee such sweeping power, and wide latitude to impose that power, would have gone through a rigorous legislative process that gave the public ample opportunity to express their support or opposition. But you'd be wrong!
SB1933 started off as a very simple bill that allowed the SoS to audit more county elections than required by current law should the required audits be completed early. The bill was given a public hearing in that form.
After the public hearing, the language empowering the SoS to take over county election administration was added, and the bill has not had a public hearing since. The bill has passed the Senate and the House Elections Committee and is only a few administrative steps away from being brought to the House floor for a vote.
If you oppose both giving this power to the unelected SoS, AND the trickery by which this bill was moved through the legislative process, enter your information to the right and urge your representative to oppose this bill should it come to the floor for a vote! And as an added bonus - warn them to be on the lookout for other undesirable language "slipped in" to other bills! In these last days of the session, these things happen!
