Tell the Senate: End the filibuster to protect our democracy

Senate Democrats recently confronted the reality of their choice: Protect our democracy and pass the For the People Act, or protect the filibuster – an outdated and abused “Jim Crow relic.”

Right now, Republicans in state legislatures across the country are aggressively attacking our right to vote, including blatant attempts to specifically target and suppress Black voters and communities of color.  This crisis facing our democracy couldn’t be more real, and addressing it couldn’t be more urgent.

But an outdated Senate procedure called the filibuster stands in our way to stop this voter suppression. The filibuster gives veto power to Republican senators who represent 43 million fewer people than Senate Democrats. Mitch McConnell has weaponized and abused the filibuster to allow a partisan minority to block overwhelmingly popular legislation and to advance his partisan and ideological interests. With the filibuster, Sen. McConnell will certainly continue to block any attempts to end voter suppression against communities of color — that was evident when Senate Republicans unanimously obstructed the effort to even begin debate on the For The People Act.

We cannot afford to let Sen. McConnell play politics with our civil rights. It’s time our Senators make clear that protecting the future of our democracy is more important than preserving a procedural relic from the past.
