Demand a Strong Global Plastics Treaty to Protect Our Ocean

In March 2022, leaders and representatives from 175 countries endorsed a historic resolution at the United Nations Environment Assembly to end plastic pollution through a Global Plastics Treaty by the end of 2024.

Unfortunately, the United States – which leads the world in creating plastic waste – is failing to step up. Unlike commitments made by the “High Ambition Coalition” countries, the U.S. proposal lacks the kind of strong, binding measures required to succeed.

This is unacceptable.

With the leadership of our colleagues at Surfrider Foundation Europe and the anticipated support of our network of global affiliates, we are demanding more. Specifically, we are calling on the Biden Administration to agree to binding measures to reduce single-use plastic production, including holding producers responsible for phasing out plastic production and ending single-use plastics.

I urge the United States to commit to strong and binding measures addressing the entire lifecycle of plastic in the Global Plastics Treaty. The treaty is an opportunity for the world to come together and take action on one of the most pressing pollution, climate and human rights issues of our time. The United States should be a leader in this effort.

As you know, plastic pollution is an international problem that affects our ocean, wildlife, human health and every part of our planet. The Global Plastics Treaty has the potential to greatly reduce plastic harm on a global scale, specifically by:

• Reducing production;
• Eliminating toxic materials;
• Banning the release of pre-production plastic pellets;
• Encouraging  reuse and refill systems;
• Requiring producer responsibility;
• Prioritizing environmental and social justice; and
• Providing a means for equitable funding to solve the plastic pollution crisis. 

These objectives must be required and agreed to through binding commitments at a global level. I ask you to demonstrate to the world that the United States is dedicated to taking the utmost action regarding this crisis.
