Solidarity with The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation

The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation is seeking equal space in the 100 Wellington St. building, which was to hold three national indigenous organizations (Assembly of First Nations, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Métis National Council). Given that we live and work on unceded Algonquin territory, we visited the site of the protest being carried out by Algonquin Grand Chief Verna Polson. We sat with her, and listened to her, and asked if we could do anything to support her efforts. She told us that having people speak out in support of her cause would be helpful. We recognize that we live and do our work on unceded Algonquin territory. In the spirit of solidarity, and reconcili-action, the Healthy Transportation Coalition seeks to join with Algonquin people and to support them in achieving their priorities.

I support the demands of The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation who are calling on the Government of Canada to provide them equal space in the 100 Wellington St. building, along with the three national Indigenous organizations (Assembly of First Nations, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Métis National Council).

What is known as Ottawa is in fact unceded Algonquin territory, and in the spirit of reconciliation, it is time for us to move beyond simple land acknowledgements and to support the first peoples of this area to ensure their priorities are acknowledged and acted upon.

The Government of Canada should recognize the title holders of this land, and ensure their demands for equal space in the building are met. I urge you to show your support for this peaceful protest, and ensure that The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation have the equal space in the building that they require (25%).

Leaving an Indigenous woman leader sleeping in a wigwam on a sidewalk in front of Parliament Hill for nine days is disrespectful and not a good sign of leadership. You’re sacrificing Grand Chief Verna Polson’s safety and health, just weeks after the release of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
