The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) took a big step by releasing its inaugural climate strategy in March 2023. But healthcare professionals know that the climate crisis is having devastating impacts already, especially on people who have been systemically marginalized. It doesn't make sense to invest healthcare workers' retirement savings in the very companies that are driving the greatest health threat we face: the climate crisis. As a HOOPP member, I was glad to see HOOPP release its climate strategy. 

But I was disappointed that HOOPP made no mention of phasing out risky investments in fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of the climate crisis. It's driving wildfires, extreme heat and flooding, and it's harming the health of the people we work with everyday. 

The Canadian Pensions Dashboard for Responsible Investing has shown two years in a row that large pensions' public equities portfolios would have had better financial returns if they had removed oil and gas from their investments ten years ago. Yet HOOPP continues to own hundreds of millions of dollars in shares in coal, oil, gas and pipeline companies. 

HOOPP said that, starting in 2025, it would stop making new private investments in some of these climate-wrecking companies. But that’s an incomplete commitment. It doesn't apply to public companies or to all fossil fuels, and 2025 is too late.

Please update HOOPP’s climate strategy with a commitment to immediately stop making new investments in fossil fuels, and a commitment to phase out all existing investments by 2025 at the latest.
