We now know, and we must act!
Beijing is preparing to host the 2022 Olympics while carrying out a genocide against its Uyghur population, an ethnic group concentrated in China's far West. Over the past few years, China has rounded up millions of Uyghurs and other Turkic groups into a vast network of concentration camps, where they suffer widespread unlivable conditions, torture, sexual violence, birth prevention measures, and even death.
Last summer, the world became aware of the extent of the horrors, when reporting revealed disturbing trends of plummeting Uyghur birth rates and a program of mass sterilization targeting Uyghur women. As a result, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights and the DC-based Newlines Institute for Strategy and Policy assembled over 50 experts from around the world to conduct an examination of the situation, which definitively concluded in an independent report that China bears responsibility for the crime of genocide against the Uyghurs.
Earlier this year, the Canadian Parliament unanimously recognized that China is committing genocide against the Uyghurs and urged the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Olympic Games. We are now asking you to sign this e-petition and call on your MPs to uphold the unanimous declaration by doing everything in their power to (1) ensure that the atrocities are rightfully recognized as genocide and (2) press the Olympic Committee to relocate the 2022 games.
Canada has a duty to act for the survivors and others who took every risk to unearth the genocide by testifying and leaking the mass of internal Chinese government documents.
