Restore ESL Classes at CCSF John Adams Campus

On November 8, 2022, the City College of San Francisco administration closed down the fully enrolled English as a second language (ESL) program at the John Adams Center in Haight Ashbury. The closure happened right before spring semester classes were published, leaving many students in limbo.

CCSF Chancellor David Martin has not given a reason for the abrupt closure of a beloved and historical program, despite protests and outrage from staff and students.

ESL Classes at City College

Dear Chancellor Martin and Trustees,

I am concerned about the removal of ESL classes from the John Adams Campus at the start of the Spring 2023 semester. This change deprives English-learning students on the city’s west side of access to essential language-learning classes and instruction.

It is not too late to fix this egregious decision. Please institute short-term ESL classes starting the week of March 6, which could alleviate any break in instruction for students.

I also ask you not to “centralize” ESL on only two or three City College campuses, which will exclude students and lead to a further drop in enrollment at our beloved community college.

Please respond to student demand and re-commit to educational equity by reinstituting ESL classes at the John Adams Campus this semester.
