Protect Our Communities from Invasive Surveillance

Imagine a city where streetlights are surveillance cameras, constantly collecting information about our daily lives and listening in on our private conversations—all for the benefit of the Police Department.

It’s happening right now in San Diego, primarily in communities of color, and if we don’t take action now, this supposed “Smart City Platform,” led by General Electric and their project named "Current," may spread nation-wide.

By taking a moment to send a strong message to the San Diego City Council and the Mayor we can stop this invasive attempt to profile and surveil communities of color in its tracks.

I have serious concerns about my privacy and my community’s safety with the “Smart Cities Platform.” I’m writing to ask you to include these concerns on the agenda for the December 17th council meeting:

Given their ability to record video and audio, I believe these streetlights violate the civil liberties of San Diego residents and should not be trusted in the unchecked control of the Police Department or the GE owned company, Current.

The people of San Diego deserve real solutions to public safety, not to have their daily lives monitored, recorded, and eavesdropped on by a private company.

I am also deeply concerned that the city’s contract explicitly states that Current owns and has the right to sell all the processed data collected in the system. As a person who believes deeply in my right to privacy and civil rights, this is very unsettling for me.

I encourage you to place a moratorium on the usage, installation, and acquisition of these surveillance street lights immediately and enforce a surveillance policy that values privacy, transparency, and co-governance, similar to the city of Oakland’s.

I look forward to hearing the city council members address their constituents’ concerns at the December 17th meeting.
