Call for #PardonShefa

Amreya Shefa is an Ethiopian immigrant, Muslim survivor and mother from Richfield, Minnesota, who is currently fighting deportation after defending herself from sexual assault. Unfortunately, Shefa’s story is not exceptional: like many Black women who defended themselves from violence, Shefa is being punished for self-defense that saved her life.

In 2011, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman prosecuted CeCe McDonald, a Black trans woman who defended herself from anti-Black, transphobic attack. Now in 2020, from the same county where George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police, Freeman is actively opposing the pardon and freedom for Amreya Shefa, a Black mother and immigrant survivor. Shefa’s pardon hearing is TODAY, June 12.

Shefa is also at heightened risk of contracting COVID-19 because she is HIV positive from one of the sexual assaults she survived.

Join the University of Minnesota Law School Detainee Rights Clinic and Survived & Punished to demand Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman drop his opposition to pardon Amreya Shefa NOW! Let's come together to fight for Shefa’s freedom from detention so she can be reunited with her children and loved ones in community.

Call Hennepin County Att. Mike Freeman: Drop your opposition to #PardonShefa!
