No More Toxic Coal Pollution in Pueblo and Denver Communities

Thank you for your support in holding the Colorado Public Utilities Commission accountable. In 2021, Colorado experienced heatwaves and drought, while Denver was also ranked #1 for worst air quality in the world amidst fires caused by the ever-worsening climate crisis. Because of these operations which greatly harm the Latino community as well as the Tribal Nations whose names the plants boast (Xcel’s Cherokee Gas Plant & Xcel's Comanche Coal Plant), we are asking for closure of the Cherokee and Comanche plants before 2030, and a swift transition to renewable energy.

Thank you for reading my comment regarding Xcel Energy’s Resource Plan. In 2021, Colorado experienced heatwaves and drought, while Denver was also ranked #1 for worst air quality in the world amidst fires caused by the ever-worsening climate crisis. 

There are changes that can be made in Xcel’s Plan to not only help combat this crisis, but also to bring about environmental justice for disproportionately impacted communities. For example, Xcel’s Cherokee gas plant operates near Commerce City, Globeville and Elyria-Swansea in North Denver - low-income, majority Latino communities that have lived with this pollution on top of pollution from Suncor and the highways for years. 

Additionally, Xcel's Comanche coal plant in Pueblo pollutes a majority Latino community where residents suffer from respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma at rates higher than the state average. Because of these operations which greatly harm the Latino community as well as the Tribal Nations whose names the plants boast, I ask for closure of the Cherokee and Comanche plants before 2030, and a swift transition to renewable energy.
