Thank the Minister Thank Minister Murray for taking bold action to protect salmon in the Discovery Islands region, by closing 15 farms. Ask her to do the same for the rest of BC’s wild salmon. First Name * Last Name * Email Address * We'll notify your representative Dear [recipient position will go here] [recipient name will go here], Your Letter * I want to extend my sincere thanks to Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray for closing 15 salmon farms in the Discovery Islands. I appreciate the hard work and commitment that was required to make this difficult decision for the protection of wild Fraser River salmon. It was important to me to hear a Fisheries Minister recognizing the dire state of BC's wild salmon and taking the time to consult broadly with the scientific community about the latest research, that her Department has failed or refused to incorporate in its science advice to her. The reaction of the BC Salmon Farmers' Association--publicly announcing that they would no longer support the government's transition plan--leaves me with deep concern for the fate of the rest of BC's salmon. The same scientific uncertainty expressed by the Minister with respect to the Discovery Islands applies equally to all salmon farming regions. If the industry refuses to invest in minimizing the harm that it is doing, there is little point in pursuing a transition plan premised on such investments being made. I am accordingly writing to urge the government to adopt a 'harvest-and-go' approach to transitioning the remaining 80 or so farms out of BC waters. If such a policy were to be adopted this year, the government could still make good on its promise to transition salmon farms from BC waters by 2025.
