I am writing to express my deep disappointment with recent coverage of the Gaza crisis and the broader issue of Palestine in Chicago Sun Times. As a loyal reader, I have come to expect balanced and unbiased reporting, but recent articles on the Palestinian crisis have fallen short of this standard. 
For example, the article “After blast kills hundreds at Gaza hospital, Hamas and Israel trade blame as rage spreads” by Associated Press updated on October 17, 2023, reported the mutual finger-pointing between Hamas and Israel over the bombing of Al Ahli Hospital, which was an unclear situation at the time. However, there was no follow-up article clarifying the international consensus and the New York Times finding that Israel used incorrect information to blame the bombing on Hamas.

In addition to omitting significant updates, there is outsized reporting of Israeli human interest stories about Hamas hostages, such as the “Son of Chicagoans” story and this “First words” story. Meanwhile, there has been no reporting on the thousands of Palestinian children held hostage by Israel even before the recent escalation of violence, as reported by Save the Children earlier this year. This bias is painting Israel as the victim, and Palestinians and their supporters as aggressors and troublemakers, blocking traffic and protesting violently.

I understand the challenges of reporting on sensitive issues, but I implore the Chicago Sun Times to uphold the principles of impartiality and accuracy that are core tenets of journalistic integrity in reporting. Reliable news sources are more important than ever, and I hope the Chicago Sun Times will continue to be one. I request that the Chicago Sun Times address this concern promptly and commit to fair and unbiased reporting in the future.
