Make Your Voice Heard – Demand Your Councillor Take a Stand for Local Democracy At City Council This Week

Doug Ford’s Bill 39, Better Municipal Governance Act, 2022 threatens democracy in our city by allowing the Mayor to propose and pass by-laws with the support of only one-third of Council. This Act, passed last week, makes Toronto, and Ottawa the only legislative bodies in the country that don’t require a 50% + 1 vote to make a decision.   

So far, 18 City Councillors have voiced their opposition to this undemocratic legislation. This week City Council will meet, discuss, and vote on motions related to Bill 39. This is City Council’s opportunity to tell John Tory that Toronto will not stand for minority rule. Even if you have already taken action, please make your voice heard again by demanding your local councillor oppose John Tory and Doug Ford’s assault on democracy in Toronto at this week’s City Council meeting.
