I am writing to you demanding urgent action from the Canadian government to support the United Nations’ plan to salvage the FSO Safer and prevent an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe. This single hull tanker is carrying 1.1 million barrels of oil and lies unmaintained in the Red Sea.

The United Nations’ salvage plan will prevent an otherwise inevitable tanker explosion or leak.  Member nations and crowdfunding have committed funds to the operation, but more money is needed. To date, Canada has not committed funds to the salvage. This must change.

We demand Canada to save the day and immediately commit $10 Million to the salvage operation. Every day we wait, approaching seasonal storms and tides make make the proposition riskier for salvage workers and the region. These demands are openly supported by thousands of Canadians and 19 environmental organisations.

A successful salvage will be a brilliant example of uniting internationally to prevent a fossil fuel catastrophe and a monumental human and environmental calamity.  A calamity that will otherwise be visited on a region already suffering the planet’s worst humanitarian crisis. If Canada acts now the salvage may not only be completed before November 6, it could be a celebratory announcement for opening COP 27.

I optimistically look forward to hearing that Canada has acted on its humanitarian and environmental values by committing funds to the salvage operation.
