Demand Support for Emergency Services in Alberta

EMS services are stretched beyond their limits.

Albertans in crisis can no longer be certain an ambulance will be available to respond when they need one. Yet, the UCP government continues to cut and privatize vital health-care services.

Every single health-care dollar should go into patient care — not into profit for corporations.

The government set up a panel to come up with long-term solutions but as the experts, we know what is needed. We can’t let the UCP government use this crisis as an excuse to Americanize our EMS system.

Instead, we need the government to address the staffing crisis by:

Filling all vacant EMS positions
Retaining paramedics by improving working conditions
Recruiting new paramedics

We need to hire more paramedics and get more ambulances on the road. Lives depend on it.

I deserve to know that if I have an accident or a medical emergency, I can call an ambulance. I am one of thousands of Albertans who are worried about not being able to get an ambulance if we need one.

It is hard to plan for an emergency, but one thing we should be able to count on is if we have a medical emergency, we can call an ambulance.  Sadly, like too many Albertans, I can no longer count on one being there if I need it.

In a health emergency, seconds can make the difference. I cannot imagine what it’s like to watch a loved one in crisis and hear that the closest ambulance is over an hour away. Being overcome with feelings of helplessness and worry. Can you?

Governments have failed to ensure EMS funding is keeping pace with population growth. Added pressures like the opioid crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic are adding strain on the system.

EMS workers have been sounding the alarm for years. Recently, there have been numerous reports of communities going hours without available ambulances or paramedics traveling hours from rural communities to cities.

Immediate action must be taken to protect our emergency medical services and staff so I am adding my voice to theirs in the hopes that action is finally taken to address this crisis.

As the government, it is your responsibility to ensure the health and safety of Albertans. This includes making sure EMS is there when we need it.

Today, I am writing to ask you to commit to three immediate actions:

1) Filling all vacant EMS positions
2) Retaining paramedics by improving working conditions
3) Recruiting new paramedics

While the Alberta EMS Provincial Advisory Committee works to develop a long-term plan to address this crisis, please listen to the health experts, and all Albertans calling for immediate action.

Lives depend on it.
