Minister McKenna: Resolve to fight climate change in 2019

Make 2019 the turning point in the fight to combat climate change.

When it comes to climate change, the science is clear: We need to work together now to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

For every incremental rise beyond that point, there will be dramatically increased threats to human health, to our safety and security, to Canada’s — and the world’s — diverse species and ecosystems, and to future generations.

In December 2018, Canada joined nearly 200 other countries in signing onto an international plan to keep the Paris Agreement alive. But more needs to be done if we want to protect the planet and future generations.

Canada must halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. The current targets, a 30 per cent drop from 2005 levels by 2030 and an 80 per cent drop by 2050, do not go far enough. They’re also not enforceable under Canadian law.

Together, we can make 2019 the year Canada shows genuine climate leadership.  Show your support by challenging Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna to make a New Year’s resolution for the climate.
