Tell Congress No More Cuts to the IRS

Congress is fast-tracking devastating funding cuts to the IRS, aiming to slash a staggering $30 billion over the next two years. The proposed $20 billion cut in fiscal year 2024, coupled with an additional $10 billion on the chopping block in fiscal year 2025, would severely cripple the IRS, making it nearly impossible for the agency to provide better service to the working class and effectively hold wealthy tax cheats accountable.

But Republicans need Democrats' support to make the cuts and undermine the IRS. Now is the time for Democrats to show their commitment to the future.

Tell your member of Congress to stop trying to defund the IRS.

An underfunded IRS lets wealthy tax cheats off the hook, makes it harder for working people to receive their refunds quickly, and maintains an inequitable focus and spotlight on Black taxpayers. A January 2023 study revealed alarming discrepancies in the IRS auditing rates, with Black taxpayers audited at markedly higher rates than their non-Black counterparts. This stark inequality can be traced back to years of budgetary neglect, leading IRS software developers to resort to shortcuts in designing audit algorithms that lack true race-blindness. The IRS needs adequate resources for modernization and increased staffing for fairness, better services and to hold the wealthy accountable.

Funding the IRS already is paying off. Money from the federal Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 helped to improve customer service, made tax filing easier and is currently helping hold wealthy tax cheats accountable. In 2021, roughly $688 billion in taxes were owed to the federal government but not paid. The IRS issued notices to 1,600 millionaires who each owed more than $250,000 in taxes and, as a result, $122 million already has been collected. That amount continues to grow as more wealthy tax cheats pay their fair share.

With 2023 being one of the most successful tax filing seasons in recent history, Congress must not undermine funding for agency modernization that would make tax filing easier for the working class. Email your representatives now:
