I am writing to implore you to sign on to the “Dear Colleague” letter urging Biden grant clemency to the 4,000+ people living on home confinement.

The letter is being circulated by Congress members Cori Bush, Pramila Jayapal, David Trone, and Bonnie Watson Coleman, and as your constituent, I am asking you to sign in order to push Biden to fulfill his promises of ending racialized mass incarceration and cutting the prison population by more than half.

Unless the Administration intervenes, 4,000+ people - many of whom are elders and immunocompromised - will be ripped from their homes and sent back to prison. These are people who have been safely and successfully reconnecting with their families and reestablishing community ties, as evidenced by the 99% success rate of home confinement.

Any circumstance where people are sent back to prisons is in direct contradiction to the Biden Administration's public promise to invest in ending mass incarceration. And if measures aren't taken to keep 4,000+ people at home and out of prison, this administration will be presiding over the fastest expansion of the federal prison population in history.

Biden wants to push Congress to come up with a fix, but we can’t let him pass the buck. He has the power to grant clemency now, and we demand he use it.

Each day that Biden doesn’t grant clemency is another day that impedes people living on home confinement from making meaningful investments in their families, employment or education - all necessary steps to fully and successfully reintegrate into and add value to their communities.

Prison facilities are not sanitary or humane spaces. And the pandemic has only worsened these conditions. People will always have a better chance at staying safe and healthy when they are at home with their communities. And it is inhumane to force people to go back to prison.

As your constituents, we are concerned that this administration will expand the federal prison population and urge you to do your part to keep people home by pushing Biden to grant clemency for all those in home confinement today! Sign on today.
