Folks are hurting. The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the glaring inequalities of this country as millions of Black, Disabled, and low-income workers have been furloughed, laid off, and/or unable to secure gainful employment. Congress has provided us with $1,800 to weather this economic crisis and now seeks to offer HURTING Americans just ONE $1,400 check. To make matters worse, arbitrary “eligibility rules” may prevent millions of hurting Black families from receiving much-needed relief. #MonthlyStimulusChecks
At present, an estimated 20 million Americans are at risk of homelessness. Full-time minimum wage earners cannot afford to rent a two-bedroom apartment anywhere in the United States, Black and low-income households spend nearly 50 percent of their income on housing alone, and 10.7 million Americans are currently unemployed. Many families cannot afford to maintain a roof over their heads, let alone meet other basic needs—such as full-time childcare, groceries, or even COVID-19-related medical expenses.
Our recently-elected government has the power to up the ante and FIGHT for Black folks and working families. Congress is shaping the next COVID-19 bill this week and they need to hear from us. Will you join Color Of Change in demanding that Congress include #MonthlyStimulusChecks in the next #COVIDRelief Package!
