We know that Twitter has never been a safe space for Black folks — from Donald Trump’s “Be there, will be wild!” tweet that incited the Jan. 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol to the continued harassment of Black women on the platform. But with Elon Musk’s recent acquisition of Twitter, we fear that, without intervention, the worst is yet to come. Within the 12 hours of Musk taking over Twitter, use of the n-word shot up almost 500% on the platform, with 398 hate tweets shared per hour. Within the first week, Musk fired hundreds of employees, including those responsible for addressing accessibility issues, protecting human rights and curtailing the spread of election misinformation on the platform.
Before purchasing Twitter, Elon Musk assured advertisers and the general public that Twitter would be “warm and welcoming to all.” But that was a lie. Instead, Musk has fanned the flames of bigotry and created the very “free-for-all hellscape” he swore he’d prevent. Almost overnight, Twitter has become a place where hate speech against Black and marginalized communities goes unchecked.
In an act of solidarity, major companies such as General Mills have decided to suspend running ads on Twitter until Musk enacts policies to protect Black and marginalized users. And now, the platform is experiencing “a massive drop in revenue.” It’s time that Coca-Cola did the same and hit Musk where it hurts: His bottom line. Send a letter to Coca-Cola executives now to demand that the company immediately suspend advertising on Twitter, immediately.
Sincerely,
