Protect Energy Choice in Irvine

Larry Agran intends to withdraw from the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA). Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs like OCPA are the lowest-hanging fruit for cities to reduce their emissions and pay lower rates for energy than through monopoly utilities like SoCal Edison. Irvine represents 60% of the OCPA customer base, meaning the agency will likely fail if the council votes to withdraw. Not only does this mean Irvine’s climate goals will not be met, but it ruins any chance for other OC cities to make meaningful progress on climate.

We need to turn out in droves to drive home the message that the community wants to remain in OCPA, and that a “letter of intent to withdraw” is not leverage to gain better rates but an irreversible decision to destroy the first renewable energy agency of its kind in Orange County.

The decision to stay in OCPA ensures ratepayers have a voice in the energy decisions that directly impact their lives. Here's why this matters for our families, environment, and wallets:

• Affordable, Clean Energy: If Irvine leaves OCPA, families will be forced back to SoCal Edison (SCE), a Wall Street-owned monopoly that prioritizes profits over people. SCE's rates have skyrocketed by 90% in the last decade, yet it only offers 33% renewable energy. OCPA, however, provides a faster, more affordable path to clean energy.

• Preserve Irvine's Investment: Withdrawing now would cost Irvine $7.5 million in lost investments, including clean energy loans set to mature in 2027. Staying in OCPA ensures we recover these funds and build a sustainable energy future.

• Local Control Matters: Unlike SCE, which answers to shareholders, OCPA is accountable to our community. We can adjust rates, like moving to the Basic Choice tier for affordability, while offering more renewable energy than SCE.

• Climate Goals at Risk: Irvine's climate action goals depend on scalable solutions like OCPA. Leaving would derail progress on reducing emissions by 2030, benefiting only corporate executives and fossil fuel interests.

Leaving OCPA removes our community's right to clean energy choices and forces us to pay higher rates with SCE. 

Please oppose any efforts to withdraw Irvine from OCPA and continue championing a sustainable, affordable, and community-first energy future.
