Call On Irvine Unified School District to Go Fossil-Free and Electrify Everything!
Switch on success and ask the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) to prioritize student health and safeguard our future by committing to a Fossil-Free IUSD and electrifying all district infrastructure by 2030.
By reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, IUSD can reduce harmful pollution and help solve the climate crisis instead of making it worse. Irvine students and teachers spend over 1000 hours each year at school—they deserve safe, healthy schools free from indoor air pollution.
IUSD parking lots are covered with solar panels, but the many gas-powered appliances and buses on our campuses can never use the clean power that flows from these panels. By switching these machines to modern and highly efficient electric heat pumps, water heaters, and buses, the district will also reduce operating costs and save the district money.
As students, parents, teachers, and community members, we call on IUSD to pass a resolution committing to:
- Achieve a 100% fossil fuel-free IUSD by 2030.
- Require all-electric equipment for new or extensively renovated school facilities.
- Upgrade existing school buildings and equipment with modern, high-efficiency electric heat pumps.
- Transition to all-electric school buses and increase the availability of bus transportation.
- Maximize on-site solar power generation and subscribe to OCPA's 100% renewable energy option.
- Include climate curriculum in K-12 IUSD classes.
Schools should prepare our youth for healthy, successful futures, not put their future at risk. Many other school districts in Southern California—including San Diego Unified and Los Angeles Unified—have committed to phasing out fossil fuels on campuses by 2030. It's time for Irvine to lead Orange County in protecting the well-being of our students and faculty.
