I am emailing to let you know that I support Canada’s nurses and health care workers. They are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we must keep them safe. Public health starts with ensuring the health of our frontline care providers.

With conflicting scientific evidence of how COVID-19 is spread, the precautionary principle must be followed. This was the lesson of the 2003 SARS outbreak that resulted in the death of 44 people, including two nurses.

I urge you heed the requests of health care workers to strengthen federal guidelines and protect nurses from potential airborne transmission. All nurses and frontline health care workers at risk of exposure, based on an organizational risk assessment, should be protected using a fit-tested N-95 respirator at a minimum.

I call on the Public Health Agency of Canada to immediately and meaningfully involve health care unions in decisions affecting workers’ health and safety, including the supply and provision of personal protective equipment.

We must not repeat the mistakes of SARS. Please act now.
