$15 federal minimum wage

With the cost of living going up, it’s clear we need a $15 federal minimum wage. Workers know it, economists know it, and the Prime Minister knows it too.

Congratulations on your recent appointment as Minister of Labour. It is an honour to serve Canadians and the public interest at the Cabinet table, and to implement policies and investments that will strengthen Canada’s labour force and economy.

One of these key policies and investments is raising the federal minimum wage. It is hopeful to see that the Prime Minister has identified this as a priority in the mandate letter you received.

As you would no doubt agree, no one working a full-time job should be living below the poverty line. Yet today, too many Canadians rely on low-wage, insecure, part-time work. This is no way to build an economy or to build a better future for this country.

Currently, close to three million Canadians earn $15 per hour or less – that’s 1 in 5 Canadian workers. Temporary and precarious employment is on the rise. In Canada, we can do better.

The time has come for Canadians to receive decent pay for their work. It’s time to make a $15 per hour federal minimum wage a reality.

With the cost of living rising faster than minimum wage, it’s about making life more affordable. This will improve the lives of young workers, women and racialized Canadians too. They are disproportionately represented among low-wage workers.

Setting a $15 federal minimum wage standard will put pressure on the provinces to follow suit.

The time is right to bring decent wages for all. Together we can make life fairer for every Canadian.
