Dear Prime Minister:

I am writing to urge the Canadian government to make Canada a global leader in gender equality by boosting funding to women’s rights organizations and feminist movements.

For far too long, these organizations have been struggling to ensure they have the resources necessary to fund their important, and often life-saving, work and the capacity to bring the voices and stories of the most marginalized to decision-makers through research and advocacy.

Your government already has a good foundation in place, including the 2019 federal budget’s commitment of $160 million over the next five years and the introduction of Women and Gender Equality as a fully resourced and legislatively enshrined department. Still, funding to women’s organizations is limited to short-term, project funding. Without core funding to support administration, research and advocacy, organizations will continue to struggle.

Despite recent progress, there is still so much work to do. Proof of the work ahead of us is demonstrated by the fact that the economic disparity between men and women has narrowed by just 0.2 per cent per year since 2006. At this slow rate of progress, it will be 164 years before we close Canada’s economic gender gap.

We’re done waiting.

Strong, independent women’s movements drive change. Sufficient and long-term core operational funding to women’s and equality-seeking organizations will ensure they have the stability they need to advance women’s rights and gender equality in our country, and carry out vital advocacy, programs and research.

It’s time to invest where our values are. We urge your government to take a stand this International Women’s Day with a real commitment to women’s equality and economic justice.
