This letter is our seventh weekly letter asking the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to prioritize spousal sponsorship and provide accommodations for the timely reunification of spouses and families who are suffering from prolonged separation from their loved ones.

We have yet to receive any response from the Minister, despite national media coverage and numerous discussions in the House of Commons about family reunification. There also has been no response from the Minister to Jenny Kwan’s open letter on this subject, dated July 10th.

The important issue of spousal sponsorship delays was featured in the news every day last week. This broad media coverage, on television, on the radio and in print, highlights the growing public concern about this issue. IRCC has yet refused interview requests by Canada’s leading media outlets to answer questions about its strategy to tackle spousal sponsorship delays.

Spousal sponsorship was addressed in the House of Commons this week by Matthew Green, and twice by Christine Normandin. Furthermore, the larger issue of family reunification was addressed by John Nater and Jody Wilson-Raybould. The laconic replies from the Liberal government in the House of Commons simply repeated the usual inconsequential talking points, without specifically answering any of the questions and without providing any solutions to the problems at hand.

However, Marco Mendicino’s response to Jody Wilson-Raybould’s question did state that IRCC was “working very diligently to find innovative ways to ensure that as many families as possible are reunited”. We hereby request clarifications and explanations regarding these “innovative ways” to reunite families, as they relate specifically to spousal sponsorship applicants from visa-required countries:

-> When will IRCC announce the exact nature of these “innovative ways” to reunite families? 
-> What budget and resources have been allocated to deploy such innovative solutions?
-> What is the timetable for the implementation of such measures?

Furthermore, we request a transcript and/or a recording of last week’s Federal-Provincial-Territorial Immigration teleconference. We trust the issue of family reunification was indeed addressed during this teleconference.

Our movement continues to gain momentum and broad political support. The Minister’s failure to even acknowledge our concerns further strengthens our resolve to exercise our constitutional rights to protest and denounce the situation and its detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of spouses and their children.

We trust IRCC will provide accommodations to promptly reunite families, as it has provided such accommodations to other immigration categories, given the extenuating circumstances.
