As a family physician, I am concerned about the future of family medicine in British Columbia. Together with my colleagues at the BC College of Family Physicians (BCCFP), we are bringing attention to the difficulty that close to 700,000 British Columbians have in finding a family doctor.

We want government to understand that an ongoing relationship between a family physician and a patient is one of the key factors proven to help prevent disease, change the outcome of disease and prolong life.

We are asking government to better value the continuous care that doctors in comprehensive family practice provide to their patients, and that evidence shows is most effective.

As family physicians, we feel increasingly undervalued by a health care system that minimizes the complexities of the work we do; undermines comprehensive longitudinal care; compensates us based on quantity of patients seen rather than quality of care we provide; and limits the amount of time that we have to spend with each patient.

It is time to begin a conversation that includes patients and family physicians on how to move forward with a solution focused on strengthening longitudinal relationships rather than episodic care.
