Last week, the federal government announced British Columbia is receiving $242 million to help ensure the reopening of schools is safe. BC’s teachers are asking the provincial government to spend that money in ways that allow students, teachers, and support staff to actually achieve appropriate and safe physical distancing.

BC’s current plan doesn’t allow for safe physical distancing. Smaller classes, reduced school density, and remote or hybrid options for students that need them are all important.

For many months now, British Columbians have been told that physical distancing is the most effective and important measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The children and adults in our schools need your help now to make sure that critical preventative measure is in place.

Even the government’s own back to school ad needed to abide by physical distancing measures in order to safely film with children and Dr. Bonnie Henry. In a recent news story, the Ministry of Education said, “in order to videotape the ad, the number of students in the room was limited for health and safety reasons, and the children were placed at safe distances from each other.”

That’s exactly what teachers and parents are asking for!

Please speak up and make sure the Ministry of Education uses that $242 million to provide hybrid or remote options in every school district, and class sizes that actually allow students and staff to distance in a safe way.
