Knock Out Interest: We did it!

We have exciting news! Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland has just announced the full elimination of interest on federal student loans. Over one million Canadians have student loans from the federal government, collectively owing more than $11 billion. The elimination of interest on student loans will put hundreds of dollars each month in the pockets of Canadians, many of whom are struggling with the increasingly high cost of living.

We did this together – This win is a result of years of hard work by students across Canada. Through our Knock Out Interest campaign, students have:

sent over 15,000 postcards and letters to Prime Minister Trudeau,
done countless media interviews on the impact of interest on student loans
met with Government officials, and
mobilized support from our friends and families.

This decision will have a positive impact on students and our families. Eliminating interest charged on student loans will help to level the playing field for Canadians and will make life more affordable for those who had to borrow to access education. 

Eliminating interest charged on Canada student loans will help young Canadians afford to live in our country with ever-increasing living costs. It will help them to save up to buy a house, or to start a family, or to work in a much-needed field even if it pays less than other options. 

We hope the full implementation of this elimination happens swiftly. Your government has taken some important steps to make education more affordable by enhancing the Canada Student Grant Program and the elimination of student loans removes a huge burden off the backs of graduates.
