The city councils of St. John's, Moncton, Halifax, and Fredericton have all passed resolutions in support of Basic Income.

I am your constituent at [submission:values:postal_code] and I urge you to join the growing chorus of support and pass a council resolution calling on the provincial and federal governments to work together towards a Basic Income.

If you have already helped pass a resolution in favour — thank you. Atlantic Canada has emerged at the forefront of the movement and momentum is growing:

Prince Edward Island
• In 2016 and 2019, the Legislative Assembly of PEI voted unanimously to pass two motions: to pursue a partnership with the federal government and establish a Basic Income pilot project; and to create an all-party Special Committee on Poverty and report back with recommendations on Basic Income.
• In 2020, the Special Committee presented its final report to the Legislative Assembly recommending that the provincial government begin negotiations with the federal government to develop and implement a Basic Income. A motion was passed to accept this report.
• In April 2022, Premier Dennis King co-signed a letter with leaders of the PEI Green and Liberal parties urging the federal government to work with the province to introduce Basic Income.

Nova Scotia
• On June 28, 2022, Halifax Regional Council voted 15 to 2 to send a letter to the Prime Minister, MPs, and Premier of Nova Scotia calling on them to work towards implementing Basic Income.

New Brunswick
• On September 20, 2022, Moncton City Council voted unanimously in favour of a motion to call on the Prime Minister, MPs, and Premier of New Brunswick to work towards implementing Basic Income.
• On October 24, 2022, Fredericton City Council passed a similar resolution to call on the Prime Minister, MPs, and Premier of New Brunswick to work towards implementing Basic Income.

Newfoundland & Labrador
• On October 3, 2022, St. John’s City Council voted unanimously in favour of a motion to call on the Prime Minister, MPs, and the Premier of NL calling for their support and implementation of Basic Income. Shortly after, the government of NL launched a new Basic Income program for youth receiving residential services.

There is a strong history of support for Basic Income by our Atlantic representatives. Among our Members of Parliament, three actively supported Bill S-273, the first-ever Private Member’s Bill for Basic Income in Canada: Wayne Easter (former MP of Malpeque) seconded the bill; Jaime Battiste (Sydney—Victoria) and Andy Fillmore (Halifax) publicly supported the bill.

Other outspoken champions include Jenica Atwin (Fredericton), Sean Casey (Charlottetown), Gudie Hutchings (Long Range Mountains), and Lenore Zann (Cumberland-Colchester).

Our senators have also been at the forefront of Basic Income advocacy: in 2020, 50 Senators signed a letter calling on the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Finance Minister to implement Basic Income. Among those signatories were: 
• NB: René Cormier, Nancy Hartling, Sandra Lovelace Nicholas, Pierrette Ringuette
• NL: Mohamed-Iqbal Ravalia
• NS: Jane Cordy, Colin Deacon, Stan Kutcher, Mary Coyle, Wanda Thomas Bernard, former Senator Terry Mercer
• PEI: Brian Francis, former Senators Diane Griffin and Mike Duffy

Senators Hartling and Deacon and former Senator Griffin have also given major speeches in support of Senate Bill S-233 for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income

Basic Income has been demonstrated time and again to be a good investment in our people, our economy, and our communities. A report by the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis showed that a national Basic Income could grow the Atlantic economy by $5B/year, create 41,000 new jobs, and increase private capital investments by nearly $900M, while lifting 183,000 Atlantic Canadian families out of poverty. Across the region, east coasters are calling on our provincial and federal governments to work together and make Basic Income reality.
