Speak up for plastic free waters!

As plastic production continues to rise, so does the amount of plastic pollution in our oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams. This plastic is impacting hundreds of species of wildlife and threatening entire aquatic ecosystems. It’s estimated that nearly 22 million pounds of plastic wind up in the Great Lakes and 9 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year — and if we don’t make changes, the rate of plastic flowing into the sea could double by 2025.

Now is the time to go upstream and stop the pollution at its source. Building off of the Illinois Senator Dick Durbin's Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act, Representative Lowenthal's (CA) plastic amendments to the INVEST in America Act (H.R. 3684) surface transportation bill will prevent the discharge of plastic pellets into our waterways. Sometimes called “nurdles,” these pellets are the pre-production plastic materials used in the production of plastic and they take the form of small beads, roughly the size of a pea. They can be easily mistaken for food by aquatic animals and brought into sources of food for other animals and humans. This important amendment will address the plastic pollution crisis and protect our communities and wildlife to create a healthier, more equitable future for us all.
