Zoos, aquariums, and museums, together with organizations and individuals from across the country, are applauding the “America the Beautiful” initiative which includes a new national goal of conserving at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. This exciting initiative will advance community-led efforts aimed at conserving nature and wildlife, stabilizing our climate, and improving equitable access to the outdoors.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently seeking public input on this new initiative, specifically with regards to their work to conserve and restore our ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes.

Today I am writing to applaud the new national goal of conserving and restoring at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030, and to encourage NOAA to accelerate and strengthen its conservation and restoration efforts in keeping with the vision for “America the Beautiful.”

For more than a century, the United States has risen to meet the major environmental challenges facing us, and science tells us that meeting this new national goal with more and stronger protected areas throughout the country is the minimum we must do if we are to:

- Protect nature and wildlife 
- Stabilize the climate   
- And increase equitable access to the outdoors

Our very future depends on taking bold action now! By working together as envisioned in “America the Beautiful,” I am confident that as a nation we can succeed.

NOAA has an especially important role in ensuring that we are conserving and restoring our ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes, which is very important to me.

I strongly encourage NOAA to use all of the tools at its disposal to rise to the challenge of this important initiative and achieve the goal of “30x30.”
