Help restore coral reefs!

Coral reefs only represent 1-2 percent of total marine habitat, yet 25 percent of marine life directly depends on them for survival. Coral reefs are also facing many threats caused by humans including pollution, overfishing, and warming waters due to climate change. Scientists estimate that unless we take immediate action, we could lose up to 70 percent of coral reefs by 2050 and 100 percent of Florida’s shallow-water corals by 2030. We have a responsibility to care for these ecosystems that we rely on for recreation, coastal protection, and jobs.

Earlier this year, the Restoring Resilient Reefs Act was introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and we need your help to move it forward!

The bill would strengthen the national Coral Reef Conservation program and allow for innovative tools and resources to the on-the-ground partners that are closest to the crisis for American reefs.

Coral reefs are some of the most spectacular and diverse ecosystems on Earth. Although they cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, they are home to more than 25 percent of all marine life. Called the rainforests of the sea, they are one of the most valuable ecosystems on the planet, providing food, jobs, and recreational opportunities to billions of people. In the U.S. alone, coral reefs have an estimated economic value of just over US $3.4 billion per year.

Despite their enormous economic and societal value, coral reefs are under immense pressure globally from rising ocean temperatures, overfishing, disease, and pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development. Scientists estimate that 90% of reefs will be gone by 2030 and completely gone by 2050 globally if we continue with business as usual.

The Restoring Resilient Reefs Act aims to fill gaps in current law to better link and translate science into improved management efforts by state and territorial management agencies.  This legislation addresses the conservation and sustainability of coral reef ecosystems through:

- Reauthorizing and revising the Coral Reef Conservation Program, which expired 15 years ago; 
- Directing NOAA to provide grants to states to support state coral reef management and restoration; 
- Requiring NOAA to establish standards for the formation of partnerships among government and community members for the stewardship of coral reefs; 
- Providing statutory authority for the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force to lead, coordinate, and strengthen federal government actions to preserve, conserve, and restore coral reef ecosystems; 
- Requiring the Department of the Interior to provide grants upon the declaration of a coral reef emergency to implement emergency plans; 
- Authorizing Interior to provide scientific expertise, technical assistance, and financial assistance for the conservation and restoration of coral reefs; and
- Establishing a National Coral Reef Management Fellowship Program.
