It's clear that we cannot trust these companies to regulate themselves. Yet they're doing everything they can to avoid accountability by attacking the federal government's proposed oil and gas emissions reduction framework.

2023 was the hottest year on record. Climate disasters affected everyone across Canada.

Yet, in the midst of this crisis, Canada’s fossil fuel companies are out of control. The tar sands already release more toxic pollution than entire megacities like Los Angeles, and a new study just revealed that the industry is underestimating these emissions by up to 6,300%. Shockingly, Big Oil likely won’t be held accountable for this massive underreporting because the federal government has still not put proper rules in place.

The signals are clear. It's time to rapidly phase out the fossil fuel industry and usher in a clean energy economy.

The first step is an immediate, strong oil and gas emissions cap with no loopholes for Big Oil.

No more delays, we need the federal government to make a legislated emissions cap their top priority. And ensure that it delivers at least a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

A strong emissions cap is the bare minimum. Moving forward, we know that cheap, clean, renewable energy is the key to a better future. We need action now to ensure affordable energy, breathable air, and a liveable climate. That means massive federal investments in renewable energy infrastructure, rapid expansion of electrified public transportation, and the expansion of affordable and green housing. All of these measures must prioritize Indigenous leadership, ensure good jobs for all, and uphold the principles of climate justice.
