This is our chance to win a windfall tax
The federal budget hasn’t passed yet and we have a rare opportunity to get a major climate win. Help us build pressure on MPs to get a tax on Big Oil's excess profits into Budget 2024.
If you’re still getting up to speed, here’s the state of play.
Last Tuesday, when Minister Freeland tabled the new federal budget, there was a glaring gap. Even though recent polling shows majority support for a tax on Big Oil’s record-breaking, inflation-fuelling profits, she didn’t include one in Budget 2024.
According to reporting by the Globe and Mail, Freeland seriously considered a windfall profits tax, and only backed off after intense industry lobbying.
But when NDP leader Jagmeet Singh spoke to the media after the budget dropped, the first thing he talked about was the Liberals' failure to take on corporate greed. He said the NDP is still on the fence about voting for this budget, and specifically called out the lack of a windfall tax. It’s safe to assume the NDP and Liberals are negotiating over a windfall tax behind closed doors right now.
That gives us a massive opportunity – for just a couple key days – to win this! Let’s contact MPs across party lines and tell them to make polluters pay their fair share to help us fight the climate and affordability crises.
