Let's move the money

A fair switch to renewable energy needs a transformative financial plan. A big part of that plan requires the richest countries to make big investments to deal with climate change.

The world’s wealthiest nations — the G7 — must:

Stop funding coal, oil and gas abroad and fund renewable energy instead.
Give much more finance to help poorer countries to make the transition to renewables

We can’t afford more time-wasting. As the largest funders of fossil fuels and historically the biggest greenhouse gas emitters, they hold a unique power and responsibility.

I am calling on you, as finance ministers of the world's richest countries and biggest economies to help set a clear transformative climate finance goal.

The previous G7 commitments to climate: such as phasing out coal power by 2035, and the commitment to stop funding fossil fuel projects fall short of what is needed to address the climate crisis.

Furthermore, many of these commitments are yet to be fulfilled. And a fair, safe energy future cannot exist without serious investment in renewables and a transformative New Collective Quantified Finance Goal.

This is the year when we must see bold climate finance commitments. You, as finance ministers of the richest nations and biggest historical emitters of greenhouse gases, clearly must provide leadership – and you have the power and resources to do so.

I am calling on you as the ministers of the world's richest countries and biggest economies to:

1) Stop funding coal, oil and gas abroad and fund renewable energy instead. 
2) Give much more finance to help poorer countries to make the transition to renewables.

Public finance is not scarce – it is poorly sourced and distributed. Your countries, as some of the world's largest fossil fuel funders and historically biggest emitters, hold a unique power and responsibility.

You have an immense opportunity for good and to avert climate breakdown if you divert just some of your vast resources towards championing the energy transition.

This energy transition must rely on renewables that serve and meet the needs of communities all over the world. The power we want cannot replicate the injustices of the past. We must also substantially address injustices and barriers in the financial system.  Finance must not leave people and countries burdened with enormous debt they can never get out of, or be tied to unfair conditions that prioritise rich countries' profit.

I am calling on you now to make that commitment today and lead on a new transformative climate finance goal.
